Course Overview:

Climate-driven extreme heat is increasing in frequency, intensity, and duration each year, disrupting nearly every aspect of life on our planet. Hundreds of millions of children worldwide face heat-related school closures annually, especially in middle and low income countries, exacerbating existing inequalities. This trend is projected to continue, making it critical to develop a global workforce with the green skills necessary to make schools heat resilient and sustainable.

Globe From Home’s ‘Heat Resilient Schools Champion’ green skills program uses a pioneering, live-streamed, virtual, ‘globe travel-based’ pedagogy to build a workforce equipped with the experiential knowledge and skills needed to help vulnerable schools worldwide become heat resilient using affordable, scalable, and sustainable solutions.

Designed for learners from non-formal and informal educational backgrounds, this 6-week online program provides participants with a pathway to sustainable livelihoods, addressing both climate change and youth unemployment.

The introductory Climate and Sustainability awareness segment takes students virtually to countries around the world to witness the impact of climate change in real time and learn about best practices in sustainability. The course includes a module on ‘Green Life Skills,’ providing learners with key personal skills to drive transformational changes. A specialized module on heat resilience delves into the impacts of extreme heat and explores solutions in personal, community, urban resilience through virtual trips around the world, studying effective heat resilience strategies in action. This informs what is required to make schools resilient. Learners will engage in practical workshops, gaining hands-on experience in installing a small solar PV system to run fans, painting cool roofs, and designing green spaces for schools. The course culminates in a climate action project, where students apply their knowledge in the real world to equip a local school with the resilience strategies they have learned, making a tangible impact.

By empowering participants to implement these solutions locally, the program prepares them for career opportunities with public and private organizations and contributes to building a global workforce capable of making world-wide schools heat-resilient at speed and scale.
