Overview

Ever since the ancient Egyptians built those massive structures, the pyramidical shape has probably been a fascination for many an architect. With possibly no connection though, many centuries after the Egyptian Pyramids were constructed, thousands of miles away, Mexico’s Maya people built the wondrous city of Chichén Itza, with original structures dating back to the 5th century AD. If the stupendous architecture from the region has always been a marvel to you, this is a session you shouldn’t miss. Join us as we explore 3D views of the entire area.

Chichén Itza or ‘mouth of the well of Itza’ refers possibly to the cenote or sinkhole at a site considered sacred to the Maya. Between the 9th and 13th centuries, aside from being a ceremonial and religious site, Chichén Itza flourished as an urban centre and a regional trade hub. Today it is one of Mexico’s major national parks with monumental ruins spread across more than 25 kilometres. It comes as no surprise that the region was recently named among the New Seven Wonders of the World and hailed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

One of the most prominent structures of Chichén Itza has got to be its massive pyramid with its 9 levels, at the core of a large plaza, called El Castillo (or ‘the castle’). You will be mesmerized to learn about how serpent-shaped shadows formed only during the fall and spring equinoxes play along the staircases on each side. Another fascinating sight in the city is the Great Ball Court used for the ritual ballgame. Creation stories and warfare tactics speak of this game having rules similar to football with players hitting the solid rubber ball towards a goal with only their elbows, hips or knees.

This session will also have you be amazed by the well-known observatory of Chichén Itza – the Caracol. It has the credit of being among the oldest observatories still standing in the Americas, highlighting how important astrology was for the Mesoamerican society. Children stand to learn a great deal about the Mayan civilization through this session and adults are sure to be enthralled too.
